The American labor movement may seem to some to have sprung from a handful of large, histoircally working-class cities like Boston, New York, Chicago and San Francisco. If we dig a little deeper into a variety of data however, we can quickly see a much richer portrait of the efforts of laborers and activists throughout American history.
This map explores AFL-CIO milestones, Labor Heritage Foundation labor landmarks, IWW chapters and activity from 1906-1920, work stoppages with more than 1,000 workers from 1993-2021 reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and US-based tech industry collective organizing efforts from 1973-2021.
